How To Not Have A Resting B Face

HR met with Amber due to complaints from coworkers virtually displaying a negative attitude. When Amber asked for examples, 60 minutes said it was all "not-verbal" advice. When pressed, it was her facial expressions that were at the heart of the issue. Some didn't feel comfortable approaching her "with that face."

She knew she had a resting bitch confront, but it had never been an issue in previous employment. Plus, her performance metrics were the highest in the department. She wasn't mean to people, so it didn't make sense to her.

Plus, how was she going to change her confront?

HR advised her to grin more in the office.

Smile Though Your Center is Breaking

After the HR meeting, she began to endure astringent anxiety, which made enforced smiles even harder. Bister felt uncomfortable, not knowing who complained or how many people felt this way about her.

Not grin enough appeared on her adjacent review. Her anxiety levels grew to such proportions that she took a leave of absence and somewhen constitute other employment. An onetime boss hired her, demonstrating that her value every bit an employee went beyond her face.

She still suffers from anxiety due to this feel. I know this to be truthful because Amber is my niece. Her face doesn't tell the story. She is positive, smart, and has a wicked sense of sense of humour. She loves to laugh and to make others laugh. Her husband would tell you that this and her kind heart are why he recently married her.

The resting bitch face is inherited. My sister and I accept deep crevices betwixt our eyebrows which we affectionately call a "brow frow." I have worked on overcoming the "brow-frow" my whole life. From experience, I can tell you lot that in that location aren't enough smiles in the world to overcome the resting bowwow face up.

The "What If" Scenarios

I wished I could say that this is an isolated feel, but I know that this had happened before and will happen once again.

What if her coworkers understood that a facial expression doesn't always tell the story? Without any context, assuming a "negative attitude" based on facial cues or trunk linguistic communication is more often than not inaccurate. That is unless you have some crazy ability to read minds.

What if these coworkers understood that their complaint wasn't about my niece merely rather their assumptions in how they perceived her? These are called automated negative thoughts or ANTs. We all accept them, and we tin all exterminate them.

What if coworkers learned that every idea and feeling we have isn't true? Developing the skills to question their feelings, or be guided to examine them, would take fabricated this situation dissolve rather than escalate.

What if , in these situations, companies help build connections between employees rather than sit down between them? For instance, creating opportunities for coworkers to get to know each other? For instance, an app chosen Coworker Coffee allows you to get to know colleagues.

How would everyone benefit?

  • The visitor would not have lost a valuable employee.
  • My niece would not continue to endure from anxiety.
  • The ability for coworkers to regulate their emotions would increment.
  • Lost time and productivity due to misassumptions wouldn't exist —translating to lost dollars.

This is merely one small case of how emotions play a large role in every organization. Emotions are a force for delivering free energy into the workplace or draining it. This is true if the person is in the part or on a video conference call.
